So, I again had this Thursday free to do what I wish. It’s really nice to have the ability to extend the weekend four days. I assure you though I don’t just sit around. I’m hard at work trying to get through my list of things I want to do before I leave. Today I made a trip to parliament and Westminster Abbey. Then I headed over to the Science Museum and spent the remainder of the day checking out all the cool stuff. It was fun. They had a ton of exhibits (the human body, steam power, agriculture, sailing, diving, plastic, and space). It was impressive. I like places that are suppose to impress kids because they usually contain a lot of boring information that children don’t like, but I do. Plus, it is presented really well in order to keep everyone who doesn’t like words interested. I was then walking and I found a theater that was selling tickets for their show, “Fat Pig” for a discounted price to students and I bought one. I basically just got back from that. Well, actually I serfed the web for a while and chatted with my brilliant flat mates. I’ll get more into it all soon. Actually now…
Okay, so I bought this ticket to “Fat Pig,” which from my previous estimation was going to be about body image. I checked out reviews and they were pretty good. It was also a pretty cheap ticket, so I can’t complain too much. The show was carried out in a small theater with only four actors/actresses. The plot involves a guy who falls for a heavy girl, but is embarrassed that he’s with her. Then his co-workers find out and give him a hard time. I thought that it would take the usual route… guy falls for girl… gets teased for his infatuation…. Something bad happens.. blah blah… he learns a lesson and they live happily ever after… that is what I expected.. However, the show sets this up really well and then ends with kind of a depressing ending.. which is fine.. but I felt like the show ended right before the characters were going to evolve… that final step… the acting was good and the writing was better. There’s a crazy ex-girlfriend written in this and she is a winner. It was like experiencing all my old breakups again. Kind of fun and terrible all at once. However, kudos to that actor being able to actually bring it back to me that well. Again, the price was fair so I can’t complain. Good play.
The play was about body image for sure, and how the media sets what the public expects of not only our individual looks, but also how we are expected to be with others who are “like” us. Coincidentally, I came back to find my flat mates actually discussing the hotness of groups of girls. I didn’t expect such a clear connection right then and there, but it was kind of cool.
I’m having a great time and I’ve got a lot of new pictures. I’ll post them maybe tomorrow evening or the next night.
PS: I accidentally took a pen home with me from the office yesterday and it made me think of a Simpsons quote.
“Another day, another box of stolen pens”- Homer, throwing a box of pens onto a pile of boxes in the back of his car.
